Alt-country favourite, Charley Crockett, is readying an additional five additional songs for his The Man From Waco Redux album, which is due to be released on May 26.
The upcoming project will expand on Crockett's critically acclaimed 2022 album, The Man From Waco. The video for the ‘redux’ version of the title-track has been made available immediately.
The new ‘redux’ version will feature revamped editions of five songs that featured on the original, including ‘July Jackson’, ‘I'm Just A Clown’, ‘Just Like Honey’, ‘The Man From Waco’ and ‘Tom Turkey’.
Speaking ahead of the announcement, Charley Crockett outlined the rationale behind the new record, “Listening back to Waco, I’d had an idea to do a part two in the style of Marty Robbins’ Gunfighter Ballads or the Johnny Cash Ballads Of The True West. I guess I’ve always been turning in these western folk ballads from the very start”.
Crockett went on to explain how he sees this unique opportunity to switch up the instrumentation and composition as a test of each song's mettle, “I’ve always been a folk songwriter, and if your tune really holds up you oughta be able to present it with any kind of band or arrangement and have the story show through.
On ‘I’m Just A Clown,’ it started out as a three chord barroom Honky Tonk number and then I went soul on it. Here we went and flipped it all around again using the same darker chords but in more of a late ‘60s folk colour”.
Fans will be excited to hear that Charley Crockett has plenty more music stored up that didn't make the cut for The Man From Waco Redux, “We cut several more that didn’t make it on this expanded edition. I could see a full album of these ballads showing up someday. Who knows?”
As part of the album's unveiling, it was also revealed that the Texas maverick will be making a high-profile appearance on The Daily Show on April 18, with Charley Crockett due to perform one of the new songs, as well as sitting down for an interview.
