From the first song, 'Red Blanket' - about a blanket made for him by his late grandma - the crowd at the Holler Saloon Stage were enchanted by Angel White. Talking about the song with Holler's host, Alyssa Bonagura, he says that it’s “about the idea that keepsakes keep people alive, no matter where they go".
His gorgeously raspy voice tells delicate and nuanced stories about loss, love and everything in between. Being a 5th generation Texan, White is a real cowboy. His family have raised horses for generations, and he still calls the Texan country home.
He went on to busk, using the experience to practise his guitar skills; “You’ve got to start barebones and build it up,” he says, explaining how busking made him ready to perform when the time came for him to open for artists including Shane Smith and the Saints, as well as Kaitlin Butts.
Speaking of his forthcoming album, Ghost of the West, White says it’s about the idea of “Native cowboys being the ghosts to the story of the western world.” He also revealed it’ll be a two-volume album, with the first volume coming out in May.
It’s clear there’s something special about White’s music; it’s inspired by the likes of Erykah Badu, Sturgill Simpson, Patsy Cline, Childish Gambino and Jimi Hendrix.
Of Hendrix, he says he’s inspired by “the lane he created for himself.” In the same vein, Angel White is creating an exciting lane for himself in country music - we can’t wait to see more.
