Kaibrienne “KB” Richins held nothing back during her American Idol audition. The 20-year-old Henefer, Utah native showcased her raspy, soulful vocals while singing Zach Bryan’s ‘Something In The Orange’.
Diagnosed with Hashimoto’s disease at a young age, KB turned to music to help her navigate the high highs and extreme lows.
Hashimoto’s disease is an autoimmune disease that attacks the thyroid and includes a number of symptoms, such as fatigue, stiff joints, pain and difficulty with regulating emotions.
“It’s been a struggle to see the most beautiful girl in the world, who I know has more potential in the tip of her finger than I will ever have, struggle to regulate her emotions so she can be going from this is the best thing in the world, to turning her head towards you and say she wants to die,” KB’s dad, Jewell, emotionally admitted.
Jewell decided to film KB singing while going on long drives to process her emotions. It didn’t take long for the videos to start going viral on TikTok, helping KB to start believing in herself and her talent.
Starting with a cough and a shake to let loose of her case of nerves KB quickly fell into her beautiful rendition of ‘Something In The Orange’. As she sang, the camera flashed to the judges giving each other smiles and nods.
“From the first note, I had like full body wave of chills. I liked even how you just kind of shook it out, you hacked up something and started singing,” Luke Bryan said with a laugh following the performance.
“I think you have a real unique tone about you and it’s very special,” Katy Perry added, noting that Richins may need some help fine-tuning it in the competition. “But that is the special sauce that people have to have when they’re forming who they are as an artist.”
And while Lionel Richie said he’s heard 'Something in the Orange' countless times, he praised Richins for a delivery that made her rendition unique.
“That was your song,” he said. “I love what you did.”
Richins received the golden ticket for her audition sending her to the Hollywood rounds, and we hope to hear her put her own touch on more country songs throughout the season.
