Every time that there’s a shadow

The Background

While there is plenty buzzing in the Yellowstone universe right now, the series' Luke Grimes has an off-screen project on the horizon that is equally deserving of the spotlight.

His highly anticipated sophomore album, Red Bird, will arrive on April 3, and, already, the collection has gifted fans the entrancing 'Love You Now'. Today, we get one more dose of the 10-track record.

'Haunted' is a different gear compared to it's lead single, but the song is just as enrapturing, the grief-stricken but hope-infused aria all-consuming and impassioned.

The Sound

'Haunted' is a sweeping number, carried on a loping beat and the pull of wanton strings. While the composition is stripped back and undemanding, the song is effective, the subtle rhythms, careful acoustic, and faraway steel sounding just as anguished yet heartening as the lyrics portray.

The Meaning

"Every time that there’s a shadow
Out the corner of my eye
Every time that there’s a whisper
In the middle of the night
I don’t fear the darkness
Like I did before
Cause I ain’t afraid of ghosts no more"

From the beginning, 'Haunted' is imbued with both grief and hope. There's an obvious loss, someone missing from our singer's life, but right now, he's not holding onto previous fears and worries.

Passing visions and faint sounds are no longer sources of anxiety for him, perhaps because he feels someone from his past is still present.

"They said that time would heal
But that clock just winds and winds
I don’t wanna wait for you
‘Til I’m on the other side
Is that you down the hallway
Dancin’ cross the floor
I ain’t afraid of ghosts no more"

He's choosing contentment over sadness, satisfied with having apparitions of a loved one around him rather than having to live with the emptiness that followed their passing.

"Damn these memories / Cause they’re all that I have," he sings, "I need you with me / ‘Cause I’m so tired of lookin’ back."

Being haunted is a small blessing for the grieving singer, who would rather have ghosts of those he cherished around him than not have anyone at all.

"No, I ain’t afraid of ghosts no more"

Every time that there’s a shadow
Out the corner of my eye
Every time that there’s a whisper
In the middle of the night
I don’t fear the darkness
Like I did before
Cause I ain’t afraid of ghosts no more

They said that time would heal
But that clock just winds and winds
I don’t wanna wait for you
‘Til I’m on the other side
Is that you down the hallway
Dancin’ cross the floor
I ain’t afraid of ghosts no more

Damn these memories
Cause they’re all that I have
I need you with me
‘Cause I’m so tired of lookin’ back
Who’d’ve thought that bein’ haunted
Would be everything I wanted
I ain’t afraid of ghosts no more
No, I ain’t afraid of ghosts no more
