Lainey Wilson has released her latest song, ‘Can’t Sit Still’. This is the first piece of music Wilson has put out since Whirlwind (Deluxe) and marks the beginning of Wilson’s next chapter. First teased back in January this year, the people’s cowgirl talks about how she is forever on the move and told fans that she "ain’t been sitting still lately anyway."
‘Can’t Sit Still’ is sonically like an old country classic with a clear locomotive beat. Not too dissimilar to Alan Jackson’s ‘Freight Train’, this song is clearly about Wilson’s fast paced, continuously moving life. It’s twangy with an infectious toe-tapping spine, rising to arena-ready drums and an anthemic chorus.
"I'm a kid in a classroom sitting on her hands
I'm a wayward Baptist trying not to dance
I been looking in the mirror saying, "Girl, you gotta chill"
But I can't sit still
I'm an outside dog on a inside leash
I'm a limb in the wind trying to shake off a leaf
I'm a raindrop running down a cracked windshield
I can't sit still"
Wilson paints a clear picture of classic, relatable scenarios from school to adulthood, recognising that she had an inimitable energy that could not be squashed, even by her own inner voice. She moves this on to nature, removing her mind’s conscious efforts to quell her desire to move. Wilson mirrors this in a runaway raindrop and a dog desperate to run. She is unstoppable.
"I ain't caught my breath since I took my first
So I guess I'll rest when I'm in the dirt
It's a sweet relief, it's a bitter pill
I'm an addict, it's a habit I can't kill
I can't sit still
I can't sit still"
From cradle to grave, Wilson shows that she’s been hungry for more ever since birth. In a way that she can’t control, she’ll keep running to the next place, the next challenge, the next chapter, and she won’t slow down. Each hit is a new high that satisfies her for a sweet moment but quickly leaves a gap for an ever-present longing to keep moving.
"When my hat's hung up and my boots ain't on
Thoughts in my head have a mind of their own
I'm climbing up the the walls, I'm going downhill
I can't sit still"
It’s not in vain, though. Wilson isn’t simply dissatisfied by what she chases, she loves what she chases and, by extension, the chase itself. Even when she’s clocked off, Wilson’s mind is working overtime, wondering what adventure she can navigate next.
"Running and gunning and running
Running and gunning and running
Running and gunning and running
Running and gunning and running
Running and gunning and running
Running and gunning and running
Running and gunning and running
Running and gunning and running"
Referencing the fast pace of the country life, Wilson adds more depth to each repetition, demonstrating the sheer relentlessness of what she does while imitating that locomotive urgency of a train racing down its tracks. She’s not out of control, but she’s not slowing down.
Lainey dropped into her fan’s inboxes saying, “I’ve never really been someone who sits still for long – there’s always another song to write, another town to get to, another reason to keep moving. ‘Can’t Sit Still’ is about that part of me that’s always been wired to keep goin’.”
