In recent years, the Merlefest line-up has included esteemed artists such as Greensky Bluegrass, Old Crow Medicine Show, Emmylou Harris, 49 Winchester, Margo Price, LeAnn Rimes, Billy Strings, Willie Nelson & Family, Alison Krauss, Charley Crockett and the late great John Prine, whose son, Tommy Prine, performed at Merlefest 2023.
Since being established in 1988, Merlefest has secured its place in the hearts of innumerable country and folk fans. The festival was founded by singer-songwriter, Doc Watson, who set up Merlefest as a tribute to his son, Eddy Merle Watson, who was sadly killed in a tractor accident at the age of 36. Before his untimely passing, Eddy Merle Watson regularly performed with his father and recorded a number of projects with him.
Merlefest honoured their founder in 2023 with a special celebration of what would've been Doc Watson's 100th birthday. This was hosted by the Kruger Brothers, and featured guest appearances from Peter Rowan, Jerry Douglas, Mitch Greenhill and more.
