Australian singer-songwriter Wesley Dean started writing his new song ‘Gypsy’ in one desert landscape and finished its cycle in another. Although his latest single began in his native Australia, he ended up shooting the music video for the track in Nashville, using a location reminiscent of the desert.

“I wrote the song in the middle of the Australian outback and Jess [Steddom], my brilliant producer for the video, came up with this idea of having me perform the song in a desert-like setting and it was exactly how I imagined it", Dean said. “It’s shot so perfectly”.

It marks the first music video Dean has shot in Nashville, where he and his family relocated in early 2021 so that he could fully focus on music. After winning Australian Idol in 2008 and releasing two studio albums, among other projects, Dean – who previously performed as Wes Carr – took a step back and reconsidered his purpose. Ultimately that break only reinforced his love for music.

‘Gypsy’ continues Dean's recent string of releases ('Are You Gonna Save My World', 'This Thing Called Life', 'Don't Look Back' and 'What Ifs & Whys'), all of which showcase his growth as a songwriter. Instead of the highly produced sound of his earlier music - as fun and energetic as that was - his writing exhibits a more raw and honest approach.

With 'Gypsy', he’d already been thinking sonically about desert spaces. “When I produced the song, I wanted it to feel like a visual depiction of someone lost out in the desert,” he said. He captures that in the video, wandering a dry, sun-soaked landscape while ruminating over the ghostly figure at the song’s center. “Swaying gypsy mind / will hypnotize every inch of you / she begs for more / Swaying gypsy lies, she takes it all,” he sings alongside a Spanish-style guitar rhythm and winding sax.

Those instrumental choices may sound different than Dean's previous songs which dealt in more traditional country sounds, but they suit 'Gypsy' and signal exciting things for the new Nashville resident. He certainly promises to bring a fresh approach to Music City.
