There's something to be said for the wisdom of youth. It's undeniably what informs the music of sibling duo Juna N Joey, and that innate charm shouldn't be ignored. The pair, who released their brand new single 'Something Good To Miss' this week, possess an honest warmth in their songwriting that belies their age - something that has quickly spoken to their fast-rising fanbase across Youtube and TikTok.
It's shown in their latest track, where they write about stumbling in love and embracing the idea of having someone to miss. It's more than an amorous tale of young love though - it welcomes the idea of growing up and learning to be away from home and the people you love. In an age where so much is expected of you as you become an adult, Juna N Joey express such feelings through direct country-pop. It's a simple message, but one they are smart to share.
With the release of their brand new video for 'Something Good To Miss' - which is premiering exclusively right here at Holler - Juna N Joey discuss wanting to one day own a bakery, their dream of harmonising with Dan + Shay and their illustrious "hook book".
Where are you from and has that influenced the type of artists you are?
Juna: We are from West Palm Beach, Florida! We aren’t surrounded by country music in our area, and we never really grew up listening to it, so that’s why I would say our hometown hasn't influenced the type of artists we are. This said, I wouldn’t choose any other genre in the world to be a part of over our country music family!
Joey: As we started listening to country music, we fell in love with it and knew this was our thing for life.
Speaking of influences, what were you listening to growing up?
Juna: Joey and I mainly listened to whatever was on the radio. We’d listen to some pop, some classic rock 'n' roll when our dad was in the car, or occasionally some ABBA when we let our mom take over the radio.
Joey: When I was younger, I mostly listened to pop and rock. I got into rock because our dad, who can only “sing in the shower”, always had it on the radio.
Did you ever want to do something other than music?
Juna: I was convinced I would be lacing up my ballerina shoes every day, and was also convinced I would own a bakery in New York (which I still haven’t given up on as something I’d do in the future). But I started making music very young, and always knew it was my top priority and the thing I loved the most.
Joey: When I was young, I had ambitions to be a pro baseball star or a magician! That didn’t end up happening, but occasionally I hit a ball or two and sometimes pull a rabbit out of a hat. All jokes aside, music is and will always be my destiny.
Are you more creative when you’re happy or when you’re sad?
Juna: I believe creativity constantly flows through me. I'm always pulling out my hook book to jot down new song ideas, thinking of ways to enhance our social media content or direct music videos for any song we could potentially drop.
Joey: I am creative when I’m both happy and sad, but I'm most creative when writing new music or brainstorming ideas.
What drives you the most?
Juna: Seeing my favorite artists out on stage, recording new music and walking red carpets makes me excited about my future and the career I was made to pursue. I am also driven by the level of excitement I have to share our music with the world, meet amazing people and be able to inspire others.
Joey: I’m most driven by being on tour and when listening to my favorite artists. I’m also driven because I have my manager and my parents right by my side, so I can make them proud while doing what I love to do.
In general, which comes first for you, the title or the song?
Juna: I would say it depends. Songwriting can be different every time I pick up a guitar. Sometimes a title or a phrase will get the song flowing. Sometimes, my fully written songs don't even have a title until the very end. It’s a very loose, go with the flow process for me.
Joey: In general, the title comes first for me. I have all my titles written down in a hook book and then get straight to the music. My favorite part of writing music is creating melodies and a lot of titles for the songs I write come from the things people say or from my experiences.
Any nicknames you care to share? How did it come about?
Juna: My actual name is Juliana but when Joey was a baby, he couldn’t pronounce it and called me “Juna.” The name stuck and is now what I go by! I’m also known as “lead foot” by my family and friends because they say I drive too fast.
Joey: People call me Elvis because they say I look like him - especially because of my long sideburns!
Who would be your dream collaboration?
Juna: My dream collaboration would be Dan + Shay because I’m obsessed with them and we could create some sick four-part harmonies on a song. It would be totally insane!
Joey: I would also have to say Dan + Shay because, just like Juna, I think a song with four-part harmonies from two duos combined would be pretty awesome.
What’s next?
Juna: Our song 'Something Good to Miss' just came out and we’re excited for everyone to check out the music video. We also have some new merch coming soon which I can’t wait to share with all our JNJ fans!
Joey: We have a tour coming up in England around September – we’ll be opening up for Twinnie and I'm super excited about it. We also have a self-titled EP coming out later in the year!
