I don’t know about you, but here at Holler we’ve been dreaming of sunshine and road trips with the windows down, underneath bright blue skies. While it may still be a while before we get those things, at least music can take us there. This week, Sara Petite is in the driver’s seat. Her song 'The Misfits' is filled with sunny vibes, rebel attitude and the pride of being different.

Not sure why it’s taken us so long to discover Sara Petite - she’s been making great music for years - but we’re sure glad she came along with new tunes right when we needed them. So gather up your band of misfits and join us on the ride, sunny days are on the way.

Where are you from and has that influenced the type of artist you are?

I live in San Diego, CA but was raised in Sumner, WA. I grew up in the the beautiful Northwest and our house was surrounded by trees. I love nature, and yes, I think it's influenced my art. Being from a small town did as well.

Speaking of influences, what were you listening to growing up?

My mum would go to the library and get us Loretta Lynn records and tapes. I also listened to oldies and classic rock.

Did you ever want to do something other than music?

Yes! I got my degree in Political Science and International Relations. Two of my uncles were in politics in Canada. I wanted to be a member of Congress or work in diplomacy.

Are you more creative when you’re happy or sad?

Equally both. I went through some really hard times so some may see it as more the latter, not the former.

In general, which comes first for you, the title or the song?

I really don't know. Creating is such a mystical, magical thing for me. If I said one came first, the next time it'd be the other way around. I can't believe I even know how to write songs, it's amazing to be paid to do something so fun. Vague answer I know, but it's all an amazing mystery to me. Sometimes it drives me crazy too!

Any nicknames you care to share?

My initials are SP and a very special friend of mine started calling me Sweet Pea. It just stuck! My family used to call me Buffalo Butt and Marshmallow Butt. My mum and sisters have no butts, so I was the fodder.

Night owl or early bird?

I love sleeping. I'm a night owl because of my job, but have been waking up earlier since Covid.... I just like getting a lot of sleep. If I was paid to sleep I would be a millionaire. I like to be awake, but there's something about being cuddled up in comfy covers and pillows and feeling well rested when you wake up!

Who would be your dream collaboration?

I think Dwight Yoakum should do a duet with me! I love his voice so much. Or maybe Bruce Springsteen with his wife Patti Scialfa. Dolly Parton would be amazing as well.

What’s next for you?

Who knows in this Wild Wild World right now. Sometimes you ride the bull and sometimes the bull rides you.....
