His debut album, For Emma, Forever Ago, gained massive attention in 2008. Recorded in a remote cabin during a period of personal turmoil for Vernon, he project is characterized by its introspective lyrics and unique sound, laying the groundwork for Bon Iver to become a prominent figure in the indie-folk genre.
Following the success of his debut, Vernon continued to evolve his sound with subsequent albums like Bon Iver, Bon Iver (2011), which showcased a more expansive and layered production. Meanwhile 22, A Million (2016) marked a departure into experimental territory, incorporating electronic elements and abstract themes. His 2019 album, i,i, further solidified his reputation for innovation and artistic depth, often reflecting on themes of identity and change.
In 2024, Bon Iver released the SABLE EP, which marked the artist's first new project in over five years. Featuring a trio of songs–‘S P E Y S I D E,’ ‘AWARDS SEASON’ and ‘THINGS BEHIND THINGS BEHIND THINGS’–the introspective record found Vernon exploring personal themes of anxiety and self-examination.
