We're counting down the days until Yola's sophomore album Stand For Myself arrives in late July. From that project, she's released a vibrant new video for the title track, which features the McCrary Sisters on backing vocals. Watch below.
In the video, directed by Allister Ann, Yola rides a motorcycle and dons neon makeup that glows under black light. If the video reminds you of 90s hip-hop music videos, there's certainly a reason. "My school years were during the 90s and 00s, and Missy Elliott’s videos were always aesthetically superior to me", Yola shares.
'Stand For Myself' celebrates an awakening. "It is about standing for ourselves throughout our lives and real change coming when we challenge our thinking", she adds. "This is who I've always been in music and in life. There was a little hiatus where I got brainwashed out of my own majesty, but a bitch is back".
Yola co-wrote 'Stand For Myself' with Dan Auerbach, Hannah V and Natalie Hemby. Auerbach also produced Stand For Myself, out July 30, marking the second time he's worked with the vocal powerhouse. Auerbach also produced Yola's 2019 debut album Walk Through Fire.
Earlier this year, Yola collaborated with Mavis Staples as part of Spotify's new Duet series. The two discussed songs that help them through difficult times. She's also planning to get back on tour, heading out on the road with Chris Stapleton on his rescheduled tour in 2021, before headlining Nashville's renowned Ryman Auditorium next year.
