MerleFest have announced the initial line-up for its historic 2023 instalment. The 2023 festival, which will take place on April 27-30, will celebrate what would have been the 100th birthday of its founder, Doc Watson.

Highwoman and Grammy-winner, Maren Morris, has been confirmed to play at MerleFest 2023, along with decorated folk-rockers, The Avett Brothers. Joining them will be Black Opry Revue, which aims to showcase Black artists in country. Their performance will feature Yasmin Williams, Chris Pierce, Ping Rose, Nikki Morgan, Aaron Vance, Mel Washington and Leon Timbo.

Morris appears following a CMA 2022 nomination for her 2022 album, Humble Quest. MerleFest festival-goers can look forward to seeing her perform tracks from this new project, as well as hits such as, ‘My Church’ and ‘Bones’.

The 2023 festival will be the 35th since MerleFest was founded by esteemed guitarist and country legend, Doc Waton. He set up the event as a fundraiser in honour of his late son, Eddy Merle Watson.

This special instalment of the festival will include a series of one-off collaborations and events that will look back on the long history of MerleFest, as well as looking forward with performances from artists at the forefront of today's Roots, Americana and country music.

Also announced as part of the line-up were MerleFest veterans, Sam Bush, Jerry Douglas and Peter Rowan. Numerous other artists complete a stellar list of performers, such as Jim Lauderdale, Andy May, Carol Rifkin and more.
