Since her blockbuster major label debut, 2005's Kerosene, Miranda Lambert has been a force to be reckoned with in the country music arena.
With a glowing catalogue of Platinum-selling hits, beloved fan-favorites, "he ain't shit" rockers, vulnerable ballads and everything in between, one of the modern queens of country has ushered in a new era with her ninth studio record, Postcards from Texas.
Featuring a string of effective lead singles, like 'Wranglers,' 'Dammit Randy,' 'Alimony' and 'No Man's Land,' the stage has been set for her highly-anticipated 2024 project, which sees the Texas entertainer going back to her roots and donning her signature sass, while also partnering for the first time with Republic Records.
Around the halfway mark of the 14-track project lies 'January Heart,' a song that comments on how two people with completely different natures can find a way to a life-giving kind of love.
Co-produced as ever by Lambert and her trusty collaborator Jon Randall, 'January Heart' is a sparse, acoustic tune that slowly builds up as the song progresses over its four minute runtime.
Starting with acoustic chord progressions and light instrumentation, the tune takes a turn to Lambert's signature soft rock sound before you know it, though her vocal prowess remains at centerstage throughout it all.
Written by Brent Cobb and Neil Medley, 'January Heart' kind of sounds like what would result if you took Kacey Musgraves award-winning penmanship, introspection and comforting crooner and combined it with Lambert's smoke-laden strength and years of experience at the top of her game.
"You see life in different colors
Like a diamond in the light
I stare off into the distance
See more black and white
You’re like a warm glass of summer
With lemon poured over ice
I got a January heart don’t we go together nice
So nice, so nice"
We find Lambert juxtaposing the differences between her and her lover right off the bat, including their perspectives on life and general temperaments.
Where usually songs like this point out all the ways that a pair are not meant for each other, this song makes a case for why these two people and their differences actually go together perfectly.
"Ah, I’ve been livin’ in Heaven
Been livin’ in better weather
Ever since you came around
You haven’t let the sun go down"
As noted in the first verse, Lambert describes herself as someone with a "January heart," meaning one that is cold and closed off. Yet, since she met her partner, she explained that it's been a spiritual and redemptive experience to share their lives together.
Since their paths crossed, her partner has never failed to meet her with warmth, love and security, which is all you can really ask for.
"You make nothin’ but sweet memories
Every one picked ripe from the vine
And I’m beginnin' to notice the effects of your wine
You find new reasons to love me
I’ve been a tough uphill climb
I’m gettin’ used to the easy way you ease my mind"
Going on further to underline all of the wonderful things her partner has given her, she explains that all of their memories are bright and sweet and she can't help but feel like she's been infected with his kindness and optimism.
She doesn't leave out the fact that she knows she's not easy to love, though. Calling herself "a tough uphill climb," she applauds him for continuing to find new reasons to love her and never giving up on her along the way.
"Ah, I’ve been livin’ in Heaven
Been livin’ in better weather
Ever since you came around
You haven’t let the sun go down"
While Lambert hasn't explicitly shared anything about 'January Heart' in particular, she has explained that Postcards from Texas as a whole serves as a love letter of sorts from her to the listeners.
From commenting on toxic relationships and the need to be free, to more profound sentiments on life and love, the 14-song album is full of lessons learned and words of wisdom.
“There’s a lot of bad decisions on this record, but that’s part of growing up. It’s part of the experience, that human experience is figuring it out. You don’t learn from things going great," she shared in a statement. "Throughout this record, there’s a lot of tenderness and living in the moment of the pain. It’s not glorifying it, but explaining."
