The Chicks discussed their biggest hits and the decision behind changing their name with Kelleigh Bannen on the latest episode of Essentials Radio on Apple Music.

The Chicks, formerly known as the Dixie Chicks, spoke candidly about the reasons behind their name change last year and how they’ve been thinking about it for a while.

On the show, Martie said “We were feeling uneasy about the name probably after the Bush stuff; just trying to kind of mature with that name is really hard, because you just feel like it has so many connotations that make people think they know who you are based on your name.

With George Floyd’s murder and the Black Lives Matter movement, we decided we had to do it”.

They went on to discuss the duet of 'Daddy’s Lessons' they did with Beyonce and how cathartic the writing process was for ‘Taking the Long Way’, their Grammy-award winning album that followed their political controversy.

The show looks in depth at a number of The Chicks songs throughout their career, while exploring the writing and recording process behind such hits as ‘You Were Mine’ and ‘Wide Open Spaces’.

The group also touch on their most recent album Gaslighter, which was released last year.

Every other weekend on Essentials Radio, a rotating cast of hosts explore the legendary hits that turned their favourite artists into superstars.
