Country-rap trailblazer Jelly Roll has given fans another taste of his upcoming album, Whitsitt Chapel, with the release of ‘Unlive’. The new song features Jelly Roll's good friend and long-time collaborator, Yelawolf.
‘Unlive’ leans towards the rap and Hip Hop-inspired territory that Jelly Roll first made his name in, while he glues together the gritty verses with a ferocious country-rock chorus.
The track explores the struggles Jelly Roll and Yelawolf experienced during their childhood (“White trash roots run deeper / I've done seen pain, pills turn to needles”).
Nonetheless, both artists accept that they can never ‘unlive’ where they came from, with Yelawolf joining Jelly Roll for a candid final verse that opens with the motivational lines, “You can't outlive it baby / But you can face it / Embrace it all / And make the best of it”.
Jelly Roll delivers a captivating, cavernous hook, and turns ‘Unlive’ into another stellar addition to the Whitsitt Chapel tracklist. Also set to feature on Jelly Roll's eagerly awaited new album is ‘She’ and ‘NEED A FAVOR’, the latter of which he performed at the 2023 CMT Awards.
Elsewhere during that star-studded evening in Texas, Jelly Roll took home an impressive three CMT Awards, including the gong for 2023 Male Video of the Year.
Shortly after the ceremony, his break-out country hit, ‘Son of a Sinner’, was certified Platinum by the RIAA, ensuring that expectations are sky-high for Whitsitt Chapel, which is due to be released on June 2.
