Festival - Two Step Inn 2023

Georgetown, Texas is in for another exciting weekend come April 20-21 as Two Step Inn 2024 sets up camp once again at San Gabriel Park. 

After unveiling Cody Johnson as the Saturday night headliner, festival organizers have revealed the the remainder of the event will be anchored by big hitters Turnpike Troubadours and Hank Williams Jr.

The ‘Til You Can't’ hitmaker and his outlaw peers will be joined by the likes of Ryan Bingham with the Texas Gentlemen, Colter Wall, Ian Munsick, ERNEST, Charley Crockett, Sierra Ferrell, Megan Moroney and a slew of others.

Also taking the stage throughout the action-packed weekend will be country standards like Martina McBride, Lee Ann Womack, Sammy Kershaw, Deana Carter, Clint Black and Neal McCoy, as well as plenty of hot new country and Americana talent, including 49 Winchester, Sam Barber, Drake Milligan, Nolan Taylor, Ella Langley, Vincent Neil Emerson, Wyatt Flores, Jake Worthington and more.

With the festival's emphasis on alt-country, folk and Americana, while still incorporating a number of mainstream country artists, Two Step Inn 2024 will bring another eclectic range of acts to Texas in April.

2023 saw the first ever installment of Two Step Inn - and boy, did the festival start with a bang. With the headlining duo of Zach Bryan and Tyler Childers, expectations were sky-high for the Texas event, and it's safe to say the Georgetown crowd were not disappointed.

Along with electrifying sets from Zach and Tyler, attendees across the weekend were able to witness unforgettable performances from the likes of Charles Wesley Godwin, Midland, Wynonna Judd, Diplo, Pillbox Patti, Priscilla Block, Alana Springsteen, Niko Moon and more.

Rodeo-men have taken on an almost mythical status in country music, standing as a touchstone for a simpler, freer way of life. Yet the majority of rodeo songs and Wild West tales have been spun by artists that were cowboys in appearance and nothing more.

That was, of course, until Cody Johnson and his band stampeded onto the scene with his untethered 2019 label debut, 

. It topped both the Billboard Top Country Albums and the All-Genre Digital Sales charts. In actual fact, this was Johnson’s fourth album, having released the previous three on his own label.

It betrays a sense of unbridled determination that Johnson honed in a non-musical arena. Born in Sebastopol, Texas, Johnson started out as a competitive bull rider, living out the harsh realities of a life that had been idealised in so many country hits.

Although his path would ultimately deviate away from the rodeo circuit and into the music industry, Johnson’s albums are pervaded by an underlying determination to bring ‘the cowboy’ back to Nashville. His fans - collectivised as CoJo Nation - celebrate Johnson’s unique authenticity in an industry that has often manipulated the cowboy aesthetic as a marketing device.

In the summer of 2021, Cody Johnson offered fans an all-access pass into his journey so far with the release of his 

 documentary, named after his 2020 Reba McEntire collaboration of the same name.

Later that year, Johnson dropped his acclaimed double album, 

, which captured the energy of the rowdy, high-octane live shows that the Texan has become known for. Two of the stand-out tracks, ‘‘Til You Can’t’ and ‘Human’, showcased Johnson’s ability to fuse down-home humility with a rip-roaring sense of carpe diem. For ‘‘Til You Can’t’, Johnson would go on to win the 2022 CMA Awards for Single of the Year and Music Video of the Year.

Johnson closes out 2022 with the release of 

, which consolidates his status as a relentless road-warrior. While he might now be riding atop the country music charts instead of a bucking bull, with each release, Johnson makes one thing abundantly clear: on a ‘Cowboy Scale of 1 to 10’, he’s unmatched.

A little known or acknowledged fact about country music is that when the genre first started gaining attention, it was originally categorized as Country & Western music.

Though the format at large has generally moved further away from the latter half of that moniker, there are a select few artists who still have "western" proudly emblazoned on their craft.

One of the true cowboys leading that charge is none other than Ian Munsick.

Born to a ranching family in the beautiful surroundings of Sheridan, Wyoming, he grew up tending cattle.

Starting at age 9, though, once the sun went down, he and his family band, the Munsick Boys, would play around town. From those first few performances, a fire was sparked inside of Munsick that told him music was his destiny.

During his formative years, Munsick was like a sponge, soaking in everything from bluegrass beloved by his father to the pop masterclass of the Beatles. He quickly began writing his own songs, drawing from a wide array of genres, including pop, rock, country and hip-hop.

He followed his dream all the way to Music City at the age of 18, where he enrolled in Nashville's prestigious Belmont University. His eponymous debut EP arrived in 2017, which included his iHeartRadio Rocky Mountain Song of the Year-winning single 'Horses Are Faster.'

Munsick landed a deal with Warner Music Nashville soon after, yielding his debut album, 

, which produced his second iHeartRadio Rocky Mountain Country Music Award for Song of the Year with standout track 'Long Haul.'

Serving as a picturesque introduction to the luscious locked cowboy that we now know and love, Munsick's debut effort offered up a whimsical blend of spacious, roots-pop that also showed off his distinctive tenor.

 marked the dawn of western pop-laced country, then his 2023 record, 

Bringing classic Western influences to center stage, 

 effectively breathes fresh Rocky Mountain air into country music as Munsick transports listeners to the wide natural expanses of Wyoming, while also tipping his hat to the Native American culture with which he's also been in close proximity to.

Including his stampeding duet with Cody Johnson, 'Long Live Cowgirls,' the record notches 18 tracks that tell tales of romance and ranch life, as well as features hard-working anthems with honkytonk hooks and mountain-time odes that are laced with an ever-present screeching fiddle.

In just a matter of years, Munsick has begun to pioneer a new brand of country that maybe isn’t so new after all. Perhaps a better way to put it is that, with Ian Munsick, western country is being reborn and reimagined.

In a sea full of songs about beer, trucks and doing country stuff, Munsick rises above the rest with the sole mission of “bringing the West to the rest.”

Hailing from Castlewood, Virginia, 49 Winchester have always sought to incorporate the conflicting impulses of both longing for home and longing for the road into their music. Over the course of their four studio albums, the eight-piece band’s Appalachian folk has gradually blossomed into a rockier and more rough-around-the-edges sound.

49 Winchester have patiently built a loyal following over the course of their three independently released albums, which began back in 2014 with their self-titled debut release. This was followed by 

 in 2018, before the trio was completed by 

The band’s mercurial, definition-defying style caught the attention of Nashville’s go-to label for Americana and alt-country music, New West Records.

In 2022, 49 Winchester released their first album with New West, 

. the project received far-reaching acclaim, and served as a celebration of the band’s roots in Virginia.

The playful artwork depicts a coal miner, embodying 49 Winchester’s continued determination to pay homage to the blue collar traditions that have long formed the backbone of country music, as epitomised on ‘Hillbilly Daydream’.

elevated 49 Winchester from regional heroes to national prodigies. Various outlets championed the group for their eclectic mix of influences, with Holler naming the 2022 album as one of its Albums of the Year.

In 2023, 49 Winchester are set to embark on a hotly anticipated tour across the US, which will see them playing in Tennessee, Arizona and more.

Charley Crockett has an aura of myth about him. As the distant relative of American folk hero Davy Crockett, he's lived up to his ancestor's name, traveling all over the country and gathering its influences into what he describes as his 'Gulf + Western music', which blends traditional country, honky tonk, blues and soul.  

Crockett was born in 1984. He grew up in Texas, where he taught himself to play guitar and write songs without any formal training. He left home at 17, using music to support himself as he busked and played in New Orleans, New York, and across the U.S. 

His talents attracted attention from the music industry, including a two-year management deal with Sony Records, but that didn't pan out. Instead, he went to Northern California, where he worked on farms, before heading to France and Morocco. 

When he returned Stateside, Crockett self-released his debut album 

 in 2015. Over the next six years, he went on to release a total of ten albums. But it wasn't until the release of 2020's 

that he began attracting more national attention for his music.  

He followed that breakthrough with a tribute album in honor of James 'Slim' Hand called

which he released in 2021. That same year, Crockett released his tenth studio album 

At the age of 37, he was named Emerging Artist of the Year at the Americana Music Awards in 2021.

In a genre where the thorny question of authenticity always seems to be looming ominously on the horizon, Colter Wall knows full well that he can drive on into the sunset without any trouble. Few artists feel as ruggedly and rustically country as Wall, who grew up in the remote sparsity of Saskatchewan, Canada.

Some voices in modern country trickle down your speakers with the smooth, warming sweetness of a Spanish brandy, while others pack the kick of a Fireball shot. Colter Wall’s weary, baritone growl, on the other hand, feels more like a slug of neat, high-proof moonshine. His 2015 debut project, 

, was an acoustic-driven traditionalist dream, staying rigorously loyal to Old West themes and imagery throughout.

Both Wall’s 2017 self-titled follow-up and his 2018 album, 

, avoided any temptation to build his sound out in a bid to gain the ears of more mainstream listeners. As much of his music betrays, there is a recurring sense of displacement for Wall, who portrays himself as operating outside of the modern country landscape and in his own, timeless patch of sonic terrain. Ironically, it is this anti-contemporary approach that has situated Colter Wall at the forefront of the country music zeitgeist.

Western Swing & Waltzes and Other Punchy Songs

, a title that leaves no room for ambiguity as to the stylistic emphasis of the record. Wall’s absorbing, weather-beaten vocals meander along deliberately, like an old tumbleweed rolling through the Wild West, and they seem to embody Wall’s determination to march steadfastly to the beat of his own drum. The inclusion of a variety of classic covers, from Marty Robbins to Stan Jones, on this daring, self-produced offering accentuates Colter Wall’s position in a liminal space between traditional and trailblazing.
